It’s My Party and I’ll Pen Macabre Fiction If I Want To

Eddie Allan “Crazy Eyes” Poe, the cat who made it cool to marry young cousins, busts out of his tomb to shake a leg for his 198th birthday, looking not a day older than 147. The Poe Museum bakes a cake, puts on walking tours of Poeish sites, invites Haunts of Richmond to perform Poe’s tale “Berenice” and sets out items owned by Elmira Royster Shelton (twice a fiancée but never a bride — blood’s thicker than water though, Elmira). The museum’s also the site of the East Coast premiere of horror director Curtis Harrington’s first film in 15 years, “Usher” (above). It’s based on “The Fall of the House of Usher” but, while praised by critics at the Munich Film Festival and others, sadly does not feature adorable singer-turned-actor Usher. Aw, Eddie, don’t cry … there’s cake! Poe’s birthday party runs Sunday, Jan. 21, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Donations accepted. 648-5523. S
