Home Front: Trash or Treasure?

For fans of the unique, the bizarre, the beautiful and the less expensive, there is a wonderful way to avoid crowded malls, spend less money and find clothing and accessories that are truly original.

"We think that intelligent people watch their money without compromising their good taste," says Butterfly Consignment Boutique owner Shirley Rogers. "When we're supposed to be good stewards of the planet, consignment is a form of recycling."

Shoppers are likely to find a variety of brand-new garments, shoes and bags at the Butterfly (5726B Patterson Ave.), which turns 20 this year, as well as an ample supply of clothing for children, men and expectant mothers.

Even when you enter a thrift store or consignment shop that has been around forever, a magical quality of mystery and excitement greets you at the door. What buried treasure will you unearth this time? "For many, it's the thrill of the hunt," says Rogers. "This is the only place where stalking is allowed."

This winter, be a boot-stomping original. Select a pair of cowboy boots, embroidered boots, wild and woolly shaggy leather boots or classy heeled boots. As Rogers says, everything "from the sublime to the ridiculous."
