If your first crushes were on boys like Herman Miller and George Nelson, Metro Modern will set your furniture-loving heart aflutter.

Owners and new Richmonders Sally and David Ramert plan to open their doors to their midcentury modern collection of vintage furniture and décor — including pieces designed by Miller and Nelson — Nov. 15 in the new patch of construction on Cary Street at Meadow.

The Ramerts relocated here from San Diego in June and brought with them 30 years' worth of '50s-, '60s- and '70s-era furniture.

In their West Coast lives, Sally taught art history and David taught history and government in local high schools and universities, so their shared interest in furniture seems natural. The aged chandeliers and bureaus witnessed the big ideas the Ramerts study.

"We have always been interested in modern and contemporary [furniture] and began to collect Milo Baughman and Herman Miller and George Nelson right from the beginning," David Ramert says. "Then we had to move into a big house. Then we had to have lots of storage!"
