Heavy Midgets “Super King” CD/Tape Release Show at Gallery5

Thursday, Jan. 30. 8 p.m.

A user-friendly blend of garage, punk and pop, Richmond’s Heavy Midgets come across like the Free Design playing with the 13th Floor Elevators. It is a beautifully rough assemblage of melodic releases built on the time-honored rock tradition of mixing honey with vinegar. The group’s debut full-length release, “Super King,” on local label Bad Grrl Records balances its sweet and savory inclinations without succumbing to pitfalls of either. Tunes sung by Charlanne McCarthy (the immediately ingratiating “Dynasty” and the bursting shimmer of “Human Gradient”) are the group’s most accessible, and it pleases crowds without getting dumb about it. It’s this push and pull that’s central to the band’s bass, drum and twin-guitar appeal. Heavy Midgets celebrate the release of their brilliantly catchy new CD and tape on Thursday, Jan. 30, at Gallery5. Malatese, New Turks and Spandrel open. Doors open at 8 p.m. $5 suggested admission.
