Heart of Glass

Remember that time a 10-year-old girl had a Panamanian dictator for a pen pal? Or when musician Jon Langford formed a band out of ads he found in the classifieds? Both are stories from "This American Life," a nationally broadcast public radio show that is, quite often, more interesting than the Internet... or at least the television. Anyway, that was the case until the program expanded its domain to Showtime and iTunes, where "This American Life" is one of the most popular podcasts. The show captures those stories that make you want to laugh and cry in a single moment, those only-in-America stories. Host Ira Glass is coming to Richmond for a lecture, but let's not call it a lecture -- let's call it a talk. Glass visits the Modlin Center for the Arts on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are free-$36. 289-8980. - Sarah Mogin
