Hazelett’s Regional Side

From seeing Style Weekly's "cold water" comment about the retiring Henrico County manager in the Power List, it must be a little-known fact that Virgil Hazelett (No. 31) has been a good friend to regional cooperation for a long time.

During the 1990s when I served on the Board of Supervisors here in Goochland County, he (along with many others in this region) was invaluable to us in our successful quest to land the $3 billion Motorola wafer fabrication plant. Though the project was eventually washed out by the tidal wave that moved much manufacturing offshore, we could not have thought about getting it without his leadership in obtaining the water, sewer and other factors, helping to line up what we could not begin to provide on our own. Even Robert Bobb, Mayor Larry Chavis and City Council provided more support for our mission than I can easily describe here. As Ben Franklin might have said, pulling together far beats hanging separately. It was a great example for regional cooperation.

Go gently into that retirement with your lovely wife, Virgil, and may God bless the both of you. If you need a glass of cold water (or maybe something even better), I know a good restaurant that will serve it to you with fond memories and a smile, always.
