Gravity is so '80s

Once, many years ago, responsible citizens used bicycles, skates and skateboards to move horizontally across the land, abiding by traffic laws and, well, things like physics. Then somebody added "extreme" to the front end of "sports" and now there are events like the Action Sports World Tour, coming to places like Barcelona, seen here, and more locally, Tredegar Iron Works June 17-18. Here you'll see 50 of the best competitive skateboarders (like Mathias Ringstrom up there), in-line skaters and BMX riders rolling up the sides of vertical ramps and then continuing on up after the ramp has definitely ended. Why? Extremity. And for a shot at $75,000 and a place in the World Championships. For the spectator whose neck gets tired from all the verticality, there are break-dancing contests, DJs, paintball, fireworks and, closing out the show Sunday, June 18, a performance by Alien Ant Farm. Starts June 17 at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $10-$16. Call 828-RAMS or visit www.actionsportstour.com.
