What is art? In the case of graffiti artist Michael Broth, there was no discussion. His “creative expressions” landed him in jail. That’s the subject of his new show, “Gated Community.” The exhibit and accompanying book chronicles his time behind bars when he was sentenced to eight months in 2004 for painting his distinctive tag, “Refuse,” 12 feet tall on a railroad bridge over Interstate 295. The show features his collection of drawings, legal documents, photographs, newspaper articles and other items relating to his arrest, trial and jail time. Will the exhibition resolve the issue of what art is and isn’t? Of course not, but it will promote discussion, which is what all good art is about. The book release for the third and final installment of Broth’s Gated Community series is Saturday, Nov. 23, at Love RVA Gallery from 7-9 p.m. Free. mickaelbroth.com
