A fistula is an abnormal connection between two epithelium-lined organs. It’s also the perfect name for a metal band. Unsurprisingly, Fistula, the Cleveland-based onslaught that takes its name from the diseased condition, is like a surgery without anesthesia. Big, loud and ugly, the group’s piercing punk drives with its pedal to the metal. I really like screamer Dan Harrington’s throat. It’s full of bad intentions and forsakes the heavily mannered Popeye screaming of standard metal for a shrieking rasp rooted in Nick Cave’s early work with the Birthday Party. He gives the group its nasty veneer. Fistula brings screeching doom to Strange Matter on Monday, Jan. 6. Richmond’s Druglord opens. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $7. strangematterrva.com.
