Event Pick: RVA May Day at Abner Clay Park

Friday, May 1

On May 4, 1886, 11 people lost their lives at a demonstration supporting a worker strike for an eight-hour day, held at Haymarket Square in Chicago. The bloody incident sparked the American labor movement that fought and died for things we take for granted. It was also the origin of international May Day observances. In Richmond, activists will gather at Abner Clay Park on Friday, May 1, continuing the fight for income equality, social justice and self-determination. The commemoration, protest and march will feature the larger-than-life puppets of Richmond’s All the Saints Theater Company. Following the march will be bandana printing by Guard n Flags and a May Day retrospective exhibit at Gallery5. People will begin gathering at the park at 6:30 p.m. before the march at 7.
