Of all the bands that appeared on David Letterman’s 33 years of late night, one of the most popular musical performances was by Future Islands. More than four million people have watched the band’s 2014 performance of “Seasons (Waiting on You)” on YouTube. The viral appearance catapulted a then-relatively obscure Baltimore-based synth-pop trio into the national spotlight. The group plays a postmodern version of English ’80s keyboard pop, and its dance-floor friendly retro-future is more than ready for prime time. Future Islands’ ace in the hole is charismatic front man Samuel T. Herring. Engagingly earnest, he embodies the suave sensuality of the Thatcher-era crooners with his own bombastic manifestation of emotions. Future Islands bring its shrewd seductions to Friday Cheers on Brown’s Island on Friday, June 5. Richmond tone rock poppers White Laces open. Gates open at 6 p.m. Admission is $10. venturerichmond.com.
