Event Pick: Big Freedia, Tank and the Bangas and Deep Velvet at Strange Matter

Oct. 15

I like music that makes me feel good. I guess that’s true for most everyone, but the joyous music of Big Freedia, the undisputed queen of bounce from New Orleans, is especially uplifting. A tantalizing mix of hip-hop hoorays, gospel-tinged liberations and sensual sass, her music is without equal in the world of bump-and-grind partying. “Drop,” her recent collaboration with Diplo and DJ Snake, features more block-rocking, booty-shaking throbs that burst at the seams with bass-booming bliss. It’s the type of dance song to which you can’t help but move. The multimedia star — she also had her own reality show — brings her distinctive, exhilarating gumbo to Strange Matter on Saturday Oct. 15. Adding to the New Orleans-flavored festivities are the Big Easy sounds of Tank and the Bangas with Richmond DJ duo Deep Velvet spinning between sets. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $20. strangematterrva.com.
