Emery at the National

For the cover art of Emery's latest album, “… In Shallow Seas We Sail,” the Seattle-based rock ensemble opted for a rather simple image — a ship's broken railing, a man descending toward a surface of water and a woman passively watching it all unfold. For anyone familiar with the screamo band's outlook on the opposite sex and the consequences of romance, it doesn't take much to deduce that the poor gentleman was pushed. Acting as musical life preservers for their fellow despondent males, offering a contrast of melancholy and brutality in passionate harmonies and guttural catharsis, Emery performs at the National on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 6:30 p.m. $15-$18. 612-1900. — Mike Hilleary
