Musicians watch out because I think we may have our next Louis Armstrong located right here in Richmond, VA.

Drew Anderson, 12, is a very polite and modest young individual with an old soul that is exemplified through his smooth jazz.

Drew commented that he was currently working on Au Privave by Charley Parker while proudly pulling out his lustrous silver trumpet. “It's sort of like a fancy horn,” Drew said with a large grin on his face.

As Drew effortlessly played a Bobby Timmons number, you would not believe you were looking at a child.

Drew's trumpet playing is directly affected by his mood. For the days he is feeling a little more tired, his tune is something smoother and less jumpy. Whereas on the days he is feeling loud and full of energy, you can expect something a little more staccato.

His favorite musicians include Lee Morgan, Miles Davis, Vincent Morales, and Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews. Drew was given the opportunity to play with Trombone Shorty at Richmond's CenterStage. “I was really excited because I got to play with one of the top musicians in New Orleans,” said Drew.

Other places that Drew has played include Second Street Festival, Richmond Public Library Gellman Room Concert Series, Virginia Historical Society, and the Library of Virginia. In order to perform at such an elite level, Drew practices daily, and takes lessons at the Richmond Youth Jazz Guild three to four days a week. Most recently the ensemble has been requested to play at the Delegate Joe Morrissey's annual community event.

Drew spends his summers at various music camps in an effort to reach his aspiration of attending Berkley College of Music in Boston. “That's a college that I can fit really well in,” explained Drew.

So, whether you are in the mood for blues, or uplifting bebop and boogie-woogie, you may have to seek out Drew and his ensemble at the Richmond Youth Jazz Guild to do the entertaining at your next event.
