You can call it whatever you like—a scam, grift, hustle, swindle, Flim Flam, or bamboozle—but one thing that is required in every confidence man is the ability to make a lie more genuine than the truth. While the art of the con is often regarded as reprehensible in real life, books, film, and television often depict such tricksters as clever rouges, people whose exploits make for some rather fun storytelling. Before the likes of “The Brothers Bloom” or the updated “Ocean’s Eleven,” there was the 1988 Frank Oz flick, “Dirty Rotten Scroundels,” which depicted Michael Caine and Steve Martin as two competing impostors vying for turf control in the French Riviera. Bringing the comedic plot to the stage, Barksdale Theatre presents a musical adaptation of the work, which originally opened in 2005. Featuring the talents of Broadway veteran Jeff McCarthy and leading Richmond actor Scott Wichmann, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” will open at the Empire Theatre on June 17 and run through Aug. 7. $19-$46. 282-2620.
