What started as a form of alternative performance art in the 1970s, the nouveau cirque, or the contemporary circus, has become a worldwide multimillion-dollar entertainment industry. Combining traditional circus skills such as acrobatics, trapeze work, dancers, jugglers, contortionists and strongmen, with an aesthetic sense of narrative set to music, these visually arresting productions of outlandish stage design, costumes and lighting can feel like you're watching a living hallucination. Joining forces with the Richmond Symphony, the Genworth Financial Symphony Pops presents “Cirque de la Symphonie.” Matching enjoyment for the eyes as well as the ears, the orchestra is scheduled to perform at Richmond CenterStage on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m. $17-$72. 600 E. Grace St. Tickets at richmondsymphony.com or by calling 800-982-2787. — Mike Hilleary
