Chili and its Masters

It might be a generational thing, but chili cook-offs always seem to bring to mind a classic “Simpsons” episode. Homer attends Springfield's annual tasting and falls victim to the Insanity Pepper, causing him to take part in a hallucinatory journey that includes a tortoise, a pyramid and a talking coyote (awesomely voiced by Johnny Cash). While you may not embark on the same kind of surrealist mind warp when 102.1 the X hosts its own spiced competition, the X Chili Cook-Off at the Richmond Raceway Complex, the opportunities for good food and good tunes abound. The event includes 24 chili competitors, minor league wrestling, motorcycle stunts (sponsored by Red Bull of course), remote-control car races and musical performances by Trapt, Framing Hanley, Pop Evil, Anberlin and Hollywood Undead on Saturday, April 18, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Tickets are $20-$25. Rain or shine. 600 E. Laburnum Ave. Go to www.1021thex.com/pages/chilimain. — Mike Hilleary
