Singer and songwriter Chan Marshall, better known by her alias, Cat Power, was discovered while opening for Liz Phair in 1994 by Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth and Tim Foljahn of Two Dollar Guitar, who helped her record her first two albums. Perhaps best known for her 2005 hit, “The Greatest,” Cat Power’s music has been called offbeat and emotionally revealing. It’s been used everywhere from commercials to movies, leading to her becoming one of the most acclaimed artists to emerge from the 1990s indie-rock scene. Although compelling, she’s also developed a reputation for unpredictable live shows, sometimes performing with her back to the audience or stopping songs abruptly. After a recent hiatus because of health issues, Cat Power released her newest album, “Sun,” in September. Critics hail it as some of her best work yet. Cat Power performs at the National on Monday, Jan. 28, at 8 p.m. $25-$30.
