Brightest Performance

Critics' Pick

It’s been a while since modern dance in Richmond leaped off stage. Mad props go to Starr Foster Dance Project for pulling off a rockin’ site-specific performance this spring, in the old Sea Dream Leather building on West Broad Street (if you’ve forgotten or weren’t born yet, Sea Dream Leather in its heyday helped outfit the likes of Bruce Springsteen and fueled dreams of glamour for many an ’80s teen). Speaking of glamour, ditching the theater setting kicked Foster’s creativity into high gear. She lighted her evening-length work, “Levitate,” with LED lights worn by the dancers, and set up just 30 folding chairs for an audience seated inches from the performers. You had to be quick to catch it — in another triumph for local modern dance, “Levitate” sold out every night of its four-Saturday run.
