Black Eyes, Cheaper Than Mascara


It's a little-known historical fact that Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrecked a few faces in her suffrage days during the 19th-century version of roller derby. Yes, Elizabeth Cady "Standoff" and The Sufferin' Jets contused many a shin on their way to the vote, and America's a better place for it. In the intervening century, the skirts got shorter, the tattoos got longer, and, in the last few years, women have found a way to make bruises on curvy hips real sexy. Hence: the roller-girl movement, running on all eight wheels here in Richmond. The River City Rollergirls, with the first inter-league bout of the season, continue the tradition of skating fist-first into the future. The Flaming Hips take on The Tiger Beatdowns at Skateland Sunday, April 15, at 7 p.m. Plus, The Dazy Layz Ballerina Boxing, a halftime show that sounds like a good excuse for wardrobe malfunctions.
