Best Under the Radar Theater Company

The folks at HATTheatre don’t have much of an advertising budget and their performance space — an intimate, 70-seat black box — is tucked into a strip mall in the far West End. But for 19 years, the troupe has produced an ongoing series of Richmond premieres, populating its casts and crews with some of the area’s best talent. Since it doesn’t publish an annual schedule, the company’s offerings often come up as a bit of a surprise. HATTheatre recently offered two intriguing productions that sparked new interest in the often-overlooked theater. In March there was “Jewtopia,” the culture-clash comedy that ran for years off-Broadway; and the just-run “Thursday’s Child,” an inspirational musical about children traveling through a war-torn land.
