Second Place: Dr. Erika Blanton
Third Place: Dr. Susan Dausch
Dr. Alice Hirata is big believer in low-intervention childbirth, and volunteers to take her medical expertise overseas. She works with Midwives for Haiti, a Richmond-based nonprofit that sends doctors to Haiti to train men and women in prenatal care. Hirata, who received her medical degree at VCU Medical Center (when it was the Medical College of Virginia) practices at the Virginia Women's Center, out of St. Mary's Hospital. Here at home she's delivered more than 5,000 babies. Dr. Erika Blanton is a pioneer in her own right. After graduating from VCU's School of Medicine in 1971, she was the first woman to go into practice as an OB/GYN in Richmond. Dr. Susan Dausch, who also specializes in bioidentical hormones and hormone replacement, works at West End Obstetrics & Gynecology's offices on Forest Avenue.
