3100 W. Cary St.
Second Place: Ashby
Third Place: Rumors Boutique and Lex’s of Carytown
Need Supply started selling vintage Levis in 1996. It’s since expanded into men’s and women’s clothing and started selling on the Web in 2008. Its Carytown home office is also its retail store and scouting post for new designs from around the world, spokeswoman Kiersyn Cocke says. Voters pick Ashby for two categories this year — including this one and best thrift or consignment store — which says a lot for a place that started basically as overflow for its sister store, Clementine. The Carytown resale shop offers inexpensive items, with unsold items going into a bathtub and available for $2 a pound with proceeds going to charity. Rumors Boutique, near VCU, is popular with students, and Lex’s of Carytown is strong on formal wear during prom season and at other times.
