Ballpark Proposal Is a Boondoggle

Amen to Melinda and Ernest Skinner on their letter about the Shockoe Bottom ballpark proposal (“Proposed Ballpark Deserves ‘Dignity,’” Letters, Feb. 4). The developer's plan promises that if we agree to pave over this rare and rich historical site with a project predicated on a risky gamble with a minor-league baseball team, not even an AAA club, the heavens will open and it will rain down millions of visitor dollars.

No matter how it is initially financed it will perpetually require our tax dollars for its maintenance, infrastructure and security. Moreover, how can we be sure that the added tax base will in fact exceed what we have now in this limited space?

If it promises the sky like a boondoggle, if it assures us of infinite benefits like a boondoggle, and its spokesmen spins it like a boondoggle, it is a boondoggle! By turning our backs on the city's greatest and unique assets, its history and discarding the countless development-ready acres on North Boulevard, you can bet that we will remain a minor league city.
