While devoted fans continue to debate the legitimacy of Sublime's recent reunion with surviving members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh, as far as the California courts are concerned they're not allowed to use the name. Still the Long Beach ska-punk trio once led by singer and songwriter Brad Nowell has undoubtedly maintained its slacker appeal. Known for producing such chill-inducing singles as “What I Got” and “Santeria,” audiences have actually been enjoying the live performances of Sublime's catalog for years thanks to the efforts of Rhode Island tribute band Badfish. While Sublime without Nowell comes across as Queen without Freddie Mercury or Nirvana without Kurt Cobain, the members of Badfish have the benefit of being fans playing for fans, never having their loyalty called into question. Badfish plays the National on Friday, Jan. 22, at 8 p.m. $15-$20.
