Ryan Kent thinks a lot about death. In his collection “Poems for Dead People,” the soliloquies he renders are akin to slowing down to rubberneck at an accident and then feeling guilty about it as you drive away. That isn’t to say that they’re cheap holidays in other people’s misery. Though there’s a morbidity that permeates every aspect of his prose, Kent’s blunt, honest portrayals are defined by their empathy. His work strives to give his subjects a dignity in death that eluded them in life. He reads from the collection Sunday, April 13, at Chop Suey Books, with fellow local wordsmiths John De Leon and Herschel Stratego. The readings begin at 6 p.m. Free.
