An Outdoor Party 50 Years in the Making

New Year's Eve at Carytown.

Half a century ago, it might’ve been inconceivable to have a New Year’s Eve party outdoors in Richmond — who can think of making out in that cold? But now, thanks to the “global mellowing” of the climate caused by people and their love of carbon dioxide, it’s very possible that the Carytown New Year’s Eve put on by the Carytown Merchants Association and Inkwell Design will be a balmy — dare we say tropical? — affair. C-town’s gambling on it, anyway, by closing down the streets and raising up a mighty beer garden, by setting up a stage for performances by Johnny Cash incarnates Black Cash and the Bad Seeds, indie jazzists OK Bird, young rock purists Duchess of York and R&B singer Anthony Jackson. Also, assuming gravity (unlike climate) stays consistent, there’ll be a ball drop at the appointed hour from the very top of the Byrd Theatre. These many things begin Sunday, Dec. 31, at 7 p.m. and are, unlike the impact on the environment, free. 349-5890. For yet other New Year’s activities, see following page — Brandon Reynolds
