8. Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (-)

Virginia's telegenic governor remains popular statewide and well-respected nationally. His schemes may not have all worked out, such as privatizing liquor stores and approving offshore oil drilling, but he's had his moments. McDonnell has succeeded in recasting himself from Neanderthal-like thinking regarding women — see his thesis — to a responsible moderate. His handling of the short-lived ousting of U.Va. President Teresa Sullivan was Solomon-like. The not-so-good news for McDonnell's power profile is that he probably won't be picked as Mitt Romney's running mate in August. But the lame-duck governor still could get a cabinet post if Romney wins.
