5 fabulous family names

1. Schwarzschild

The name conjures everything from David Yurman to Herend place settings to the thrill that comes with opening its signature blue box. At a time when most family retailers have been gobbled up by dynastic chains, the original Schwarzschild store retains its grip at the corner of Second and Broad streets, the last of the carriage-trade retailers. Schwarzschild also connotes our local heritage in finance. The late W. Harry Schwarzschild Jr., former president and chairman of Central National Bank, has been called one of the pre-eminent bankers of the East.

2. Thalhimer

The flagship department store may have closed in 1985 but its magic lives on in closets, attics and recipe boxes around town.

3. Lambert

A name synonymous with graciousness. The Lamberts etched out their place in Richmond history in hospitality, politics and finance.

4. Scott

Few names are as "old" Richmond as Scott. First in banking and investment, the name equally signifies the city's pioneering efforts in historic preservation and environmentalism.

5. Bryan

Founders of the Richmond newspapers. But it was the late D. Tennant Bryan who took the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the News Leader and built them into the media powerhouse it is today. Like the Scotts, the Bryans epitomize "old" Richmond as the arbiters of civic life.
