Richmond is littered with doodle pads. And when I say doodle pads, I mean people with tattoos. You can’t walk a block in this city without seeing a body that hasn’t been doodled on. As a fan of the human form, I find the practice an exercise in narcissistic conformity, but even I, an avowed tattoo hater, with a tattoo, cannot deny that many fine Richmond artists through the years have played key roles in advancing the once taboo, centuries-old art form to its culturally acceptable status. The 21st annual Richmond Tattoo Arts Festival takes place at the Great Richmond Convention Center this weekend, featuring tattoo artists from around the globe. The three-day event showcases the modern-day advances by those who ink skin for a living and the culture that’s sprung up around them. Convention details are online at rvatattoo.com.
