We had to go vault digging for RPG’s first recording, which was available only on a 1999 compilation called “Richmond Roulette.” But this is an important song. “I Started the End” laid the blueprint for the hard-rock band’s career — it’s a thick, two-minute slice of blistering speed rock that likely contributed to flying beers and bodies at those Hole in the Wall shows with Lamb of God. Fast-forward 13 years and RPG has finished a new set of head bangers for a disc called “High Loathsome.” Well, half of it head bangs, anyway. The other half features several songs that are triumphantly introspective and even slow. Look for an interview with the always surprising RPG and a preview of the new album’s title track in a forthcoming issue of Style. myspace.com/rpgva.
