New Restaurant Serves Area Well

I found your review of The Edible Garden close-minded and ill-conceived, not to mention offensive and mean-spirited ("Mothers Touch," Food & Drink, July 13). Your choice to rate the restaurant based on the background of the owners (who happen to be mothers) rather than even start with your perception of the food and atmosphere betrays your agenda that was obviously prejudiced before going in.

I do not understand the relevance of the fact that the owners of The Edible Garden are mothers or what their careers were prior to opening the restaurant. I further do not understand why their backgrounds could be conceived of as shortcomings. They have hired great help, are supplying the restaurant with top-quality local and seasonal ingredients, and have made the atmosphere of the restaurant more sophisticated. If they are in fact operating with shortcomings, I would like to know what those are.

My experience with the restaurant has been very positive, as has everyone I have talked to who has dined at The Edible Garden (the Richmond Times-Dispatch included). Harris and Goldstein are patronizing local farms and vendors, as well as artists. They are taking the time to create a fabulous garden, which they already use regularly. They are focusing on organic, seasonal and healthy foods, while creating delicious meals. You did not even take the time to mention the takeout dinners served during the week, which are perfect for families, couples, and singles, especially in an underserved area. While family is certainly important to these women, their business is stellar, and to portray it as otherwise is to do your readers a disservice.

Correction

In a profile of Dominion Resources chairman and chief executive Thomas E. Capps, part of our Power List (Cover Story, July 20), we should have referenced the North Anna nuclear plant, not South Anna. Style regrets the error.
